About this award
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration awarded the South Dakota Department of Transportation $825,254 on December 1, 2025, under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237) to fund three commercial vehicle safety projects with a period of performance through September 30, 2030.
The award funds procurement, deployment, and operation of weigh-in-motion systems and load cells at two port-of-entry locations; modification of the state's IRP/IFTA system software and registration workflow to automate Unified Carrier Registration verification and maintain records with timely filing; and development and deployment of a wind warning system to prevent wind-related commercial vehicle rollovers. The wind warning system will ingest wind speed, gust, and direction data from the National Weather Service and the South Dakota Department of Transportation's road and weather information systems, analyze wind conditions relative to state highway network segment alignment using industry-standard truck type definitions, generate wind warning and closure advisories, and present real-time advisories through SD511 products including website, mobile apps, interactive voice response, and push notifications. The system will also generate a GeoJSON data feed updated every five minutes for third-party providers and in-cab commercial vehicle applications, with documentation in industry-standard Swagger format. Work is performed in South Dakota.
