About this award
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration awarded the Massachusetts Department of Transportation $1,002,239 on December 1, 2025, under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237) to implement real-time driver alerts on commercial motor vehicle safety and support the Innovative Technology Deployment (ITD) program.
Project 1 deploys an in-cab notification system for commercial motor vehicle drivers in work zones, congested areas, and ahead of low bridge overpasses. The system targets a 5 percent reduction in speed, acceleration, and hard braking by drivers receiving in-cab notifications and a 15 percent reduction in crash rates for commercial motor vehicles in work zones over a twelve-month measurement period. The project obligates $897,920 for contractual costs to implement the actual in-cab work zone and traffic alert system; prior study costs were removed because the proposed technology has been researched and is currently in use.
Project 2 maintains all components of the Massachusetts ITD program in fully active, participatory, and funded status to sustain Massachusetts core ITD certification. This project supports ITD program administration to maintain forward progress on ongoing initiatives and those planned for future expanded ITD program deployment, preserving core capabilities and systems.
The period of performance runs from December 1, 2025, through September 30, 2030. Performance and administrative oversight occur in Massachusetts.

Project 1 reduction narrative ($897,920) reduced due to the proposed technology has been researched in the past and is currently being utilized.
