About this award
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) awarded a $1,342,761 Project Grant under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237) to the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska. The goal of this project is to advance the safety protocols for Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) by integrating real-time roadside hazardous conditions detection technologies into the transportation system, designing low-cost and scalable wireless network solutions for rural transportation scenarios, evaluating the impact of a roadside Crash Avoidance Warning System on driver response times and decision-making, and increasing CMV driver awareness of in-vehicle and roadside safety technologies. The project will be performed by the University of Nebraska, a major research institution with extensive experience in federal grant and contract work across multiple disciplines including transportation, engineering, and national security. The award duration is from September 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026.
Description
The goal of this project is to design low-cost and scalable wireless network solutions to meet the unique environmental factors in rural transportation scenarios, such as the limitation of power, backhaul, connectivity, and isolated sites. The goal of this project is to rigorously evaluate the impact of a roadside crash avoidance warning system (caws) on driver response times and decision-making under varied rural roadway conditions, informed by realistic rural connectivity characteristics. The goal of this project is to increase CMV drivers awareness of in-vehicle and roadside technologies capable of improving CMV safety.
