About this award
This $1,332,135 federal Project Grant award from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (CFDA 20.237 - Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements) will support two key initiatives by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT):
-
Deployment of a Tire Abnormality Detection System (TADS) to electronically screen commercial vehicle tires at existing and new virtual weigh stations in Delaware. This system aims to identify unsafe tires and reduce the risk of crashes, enhancing safety for commercial vehicle drivers and the public.
-
Continued provision of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alerts (CVSA) system, which provides real-time alerts to commercial vehicle drivers about work zones, crashes, and congestion on the I-95 corridor, I-295, US-301, and other major routes in Delaware. This will enable drivers to safely decelerate and avoid incidents, further improving road safety.
The award period runs from September 1, 2024 through September 30, 2028, supporting these critical commercial vehicle safety projects in Delaware.
Description
The purpose of this award to the delaware department of transportation is the tire abnormality detection system commercial vehicle safety alerts system projects, which will benefit the motor carrier industry by protecting commercial vehicle drivers by reducing the possibility of accidents by identifying unsafe tires. This system is another tool to help prevent crashes before they occur. Improved safety by providing advance warning, the work zone incident communication system (wzic) system will reduce risk of truck accidents in work zones and incident queues, benefiting the motor carrier community and the public alike.project 1 objective:this project is for the deployment of a tire abnormality detection system (tads) to electronically screen tires of commercial vehicles near delaware weigh stations. Install the tads at existing virtual weigh station (VWS) on SR-1 NB, on the ramp to the blackbird weigh station (US-13 NB), at a new VWS planned for US-13 SB in harrington, DE and at one additional location to be determined (TBD).project 2 objective:this project is to continue providing the cvsa system that was piloted in delaware in 2023. This system alerts drivers of real-time road conditions, including slowdowns associated with, work zones, crashes and congestion. This system enables drivers to make safer driving decisions and helping to improve overall road safety. The objective of this project is to provide alerts for slowdowns and congestion queues based on real-time data that will give CMV drivers more time to safely decelerate as they approach an incident, resulting in reduction in crashes involving cmvs. This project will pay for 3 years of data for continued provision of cvsa system based on real-time traffic data. Alerts will continue to be provided for vehicles traveling on the i-95 corridor, i-295, US-301 and segments of US-13, US-113 and state route (SR)-1.
