About this award
This $840,000 federal Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237) will support the Vermont Agency of Transportation's (VTrans) "Tire Pressure Anomaly System Project." The goal of this initiative is to install a system capable of detecting tire pressure anomalies in commercial vehicles as they travel through inspection stations or on highways. The system will capture photographic evidence of the vehicle, identify the specific tire with low pressure, and transmit this data along with the carrier's USDOT number to enforcement officials. This technology is expected to improve safety, tire longevity, and cost-savings for the motor carrier industry by enabling early intervention on underinflated tires before they result in breakdowns or crashes.
Description
The purpose of this award to vermont agency of transportation - DMV is the tire pressure anomaly system project, which will benefit the motor carrier industry by enabling improved safety and compliance, tire longevity by intervention with underinflated tire before they go flatreducing cost of tires and roadside repair and better enforcement screening capabilities. The objective is to purchase and install a tire pressure anomaly system capable of detecting tire pressure anomalies in commercial vehicles as they travel across the sensors at inspection station ramp speed or main line speed. The system will transmit a photographic image of the power unit along with the location of the tire on the vehicle with the pressure anomaly. The unit will also be capable of reading the usdot number marked on the commercial vehicle and transmit a response with carrier information to a logged in user.
