About this award

This Project Grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration within the U.S. Department of Transportation provides $1,301,162 to South Carolina State University to develop a commercial motor vehicle safety application using artificial intelligence. The application will detect vehicles under different weather and lighting conditions and generate safety alerts to reduce the risk of crashes. It will produce basic safety message data, estimate potential times of conflict between commercial motor vehicles and other vehicles, and display warnings on dynamic message signs placed at various work zones. This work supports the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance High Priority Activities Grants and Cooperative Agreements program (CFDA 20.237) by developing technologies to improve safety for commercial motor vehicles and other drivers. The period of performance is July 1, 2022 through September 30, 2024.

Description

This award to the south carolina state university is for research to develop a safety application for cmvs in which an artificial intelligence based AI model is created the application will detect vehicles under different weather and lighting conditions, and subsequently generate safety alerts for a potential risk of a crash such application needs to be developed based on a thorough understanding of a risk based warning system for cmvs and real time system performance using an AI model, the system can generate basic safety message data, and will estimate the potential time of conflict if cmvs are in a collision path with other vehicles, a warning will be shown using a dynamic message sign these signs will be placed at various work zones the alerts will be generated in real time, satisfying the requirements of safety critical CMV related applications, and eventually improving the safety of cmvs and non cmvs
