About this award
Under a $1,999,984 Project Grant from the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (CFDA 11.038 - Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund Grant Program), Phasorlab Inc. is leading the development of 5GLM, a large language model for realistic user equipment (UE) simulation and channel response modeling for 4G and 5G radio access networks. Phasorlab is partnering with Cimulate Inc. and Parallel Wireless as sub-recipients on this 2-year project. The key activities include building a large-scale dataset to train 5GLM, developing the large language model, and demonstrating its integration with simulation infrastructure to showcase its scalability, cost-efficiency, and realism compared to hardware-based emulation approaches. The intended beneficiaries are vendors, suppliers, companies, and institutions working on open radio access network (O-RAN) technologies.
Description
- Activities
- The project has three phases: 1. Building a large-scale 'language' dataset that enables training of 5GLM but eventually other OSS llms. 2. Training 5GLM, a large language model on the dataset. This phase will additionally contribute to research on long-sequence length transformer models. 3. Demonstrating E2E testing with 5GLM and PWS simulation/ emulation infrastructure. This phase will demonstrate the relative merits of the approach: scalability, cost efficiency, and realism on PAR with hardware-based emulation approaches.
- Expected outcomes
- The goal of this 5GLM r & d project is to develop new and enhanced UE simulation methods for load testing of existing 4G and 5G radio access networks. The goal is to make material improvement on the scalability and accuracy of current methods developed for testing end-to-end performance oran solutions with real traffic loads.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Beneficiaries of this project include vendors, suppliers, companies, and institutions in the o-ran space that will have access to a newly developed class of realistic 5G UE simulators that are more efficient and cost effective.
- Subrecipient activities
- Phasorlab, the lead applicant, will provide 30% of the cost of the project; cimulate, INC. 45%; and parallel wireless, 25%. Cimulate is providing engineering support for model building, development, architecting, building, and training the system through personnel, travel, and indirect costs. Parallel wireless is supporting the project with personnel, management support, engineering, travel, and access to the parallel wireless lab.
