Project Grant 2605828
- The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded the University of Houston System $398,129 on August 15, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to conduct a longitudinal research study examining how engineering identity develops during undergraduate students' first two years and how that identity development influences persistence to degree completion. The research employs photovoice methodology to visualize and explore factors that influence...
- Northeastern University received a $232,598 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation on April 15, 2021 to design and develop an instructional incubator and teaching apprenticeship model to foster graduate student professional development. The grant is funded through the NSF's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), which seeks to improve engineering research and education quality and foster innovation. Under the award, Northeastern University will design and develop an instructional...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $392,226 Project Grant to the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska through the STEM Education federal grant program (CFDA 47.076) to support an Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site project from May 2023 to April 2026. The University will engage eight students per summer for three years in engineering education research and professional development activities. Students will investigate questions in the area of engineering education...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Northeastern University a $233,204 Project Grant under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) for the period of February 15, 2021 through January 31, 2024. The grant funds collaborative research to control information processing and learning in neuronal networks through light-mediated programming of genomic networks. The Engineering program seeks to improve quality of life and economic strength by fostering innovation and excellence in engineering...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded $131,812 to the University of Houston System (operating as University of Houston-Clear Lake) on July 15, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to redesign an early engineering class using community cultural wealth and collaborative project-based learning. The project addresses early retention and success in engineering education by strengthening how early engineering students at primarily...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska $463,714 on October 1, 2026, to establish and operate a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln focused on engineering education research (CFDA 47.041, Engineering). The REU Site engages undergraduate students in immersive research experiences connecting engineering education research to real-world engineering...
- Northeastern University was awarded a $404,391 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation under the Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.041) to establish a Research Experiences for Undergraduates Site. The three-year REU Site will host 10 community college students each summer to participate in research projects focused on the field of smart engineering, including artificial intelligence/machine learning, smart infrastructures, smart materials, and smart health. Students will be...
- This $1,611,154 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) supports the development and testing of a model for informal engineering programming designed to foster engineering identities among youth aged 9-12 in Houston's Second and Third Wards. The University of Houston System, as the prime awardee, will implement a 16-week after-school program that includes hands-on engineering design projects, opportunities to interact with diverse...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. $647,441 on September 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to investigate how messages encountered in undergraduate engineering programs shape student engineering identity development and persistence decisions. The project examines messages from courses, advising, peers, professional experiences, media, and broader beliefs about engineering to...
- This $345,183 National Science Foundation project grant supports Oregon State University in developing a model of engineering design activity engagement and identity motives among students and professionals. Funded under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), the three-year award beginning September 2022 aims to investigate how and why civil and mechanical engineering students and practicing engineers engage with engineering design. Key objectives include developing an engagement model,...
The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded Northeastern University $200,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to investigate how recognition from K-12 students strengthens engineering identity formation in first-year undergraduate engineering students. The research will examine an established Northeastern service-learning program in which first-year undergraduates lead hands-on engineering, science, and building activities with elementary and middle school children over a semester. The project explores whether the recognition undergraduates receive from K-12 students—who often view the undergraduates as engineering experts despite the undergraduates' own uncertainty about their professional identities—supports the undergraduates' developing sense of themselves as engineers and increases persistence to graduation. The work addresses documented attrition in undergraduate engineering degree programs: approximately half of students who enroll in accredited engineering programs do not complete them, and research shows that undergraduates who do not identify as engineers persist to graduation at lower rates than those who do. First-year students face particular vulnerability during identity formation. Performance occurs at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028.
