About this award

Grant Summary

The U.S. Forest Service, Region 8 (Southern Region), awarded $250,000 to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services on September 16, 2025, under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act Nursery Vegetation program (CFDA 10.736). This project grant, which extends through September 15, 2030, supports the modernization and expansion of tree seedling nursery and tree seed orchard facilities within North Carolina to enhance the state's capacity for producing plant material critical to revegetation and reforestation efforts across all land types.

The funding enables the awardee to implement capital improvements and equipment upgrades at state nursery and seed orchard facilities, including investments in greenhouse infrastructure, seed extraction and storage capabilities, and production equipment. In conjunction with facility enhancements, the grant also supports staffing, training, travel, and contract labor activities necessary to increase seedling and seed production capacity. These investments directly advance regional coordination and collaboration efforts to ensure a resilient, ecologically appropriate supply of native plant material for post-fire recovery, post-harvest reforestation, and other landscape restoration priorities across the Southern Region.

Description

These funds, provided through the bipartisan infrastructure law, are for the sustainable management of america's non-federal forests for the benefit of society by enabling non-industrial private forest landowners to better manage, protect, and use their natural resources. In combination with the forest stewardship program, use the rural forestry assistance authorities to support revegetation, nurseries, genetic resource activities. Funds will be prioritized to enhance state and tribal nursery capacity, improve seed orchards, and improve regional coordination and collaboration to ensure a resilient, ecologically appropriate supply of plant material for revegetation and reforestation efforts across all lands.
