State will complete fuels reduction activities including thinning, pruning, mastication, and acres of brush disposal

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources received a $500,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service under the State & Private Forestry Hazardous Fuel Reduction Program (CFDA 10.697), awarded on August 22, 2025, with a completion deadline of August 21, 2029. The grant funds hazardous fuel reduction activities conducted on non-federal lands in Washington to mitigate catastrophic wildfire risk and restore fire-adapted landscapes. The funded work includes mechanical thinning, pruning, mastication, and brush disposal across multiple acres, with activities designed to complement federal land management efforts and reduce wildfire threats to communities and natural resources.

This four-year grant aligns with the program's objectives of reducing hazardous fuels in forests and woodlands while benefiting adjacent federal lands. As a state natural resource management agency overseeing approximately 5.6 million acres of public lands, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources is well-positioned to execute landscape-scale fuel reduction treatments that strengthen community resilience against catastrophic wildfire threats across the Pacific Northwest region.
