- This National Science Foundation project grant of $172,947 will fund the development of open response assessments to evaluate undergraduate student engagement in mathematical sensemaking across biology, chemistry, and physics disciplines. Awarded under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), the funding will support two aims over a four year period from March 2023 through February 2027. The first aim is to apply an evidence-centered design process to develop open-ended assessment items...
- The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York received a $700,033 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program. The grant aims to improve secondary mathematics education through a teacher preparation program that emphasizes community, equity, and inclusion. Over 5 years, the project will recruit 24 undergraduate mathematics majors and prepare them to become effective middle and high school mathematics teachers for...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded Middle Tennessee State University a $154,929 Project Grant under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop open-response assessments to evaluate undergraduate student engagement in mathematical sensemaking across biology, chemistry, and physics disciplines. The University will apply an evidence-centered design process over the four-year period from March 2023 to February 2027 to construct open-ended...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded $1,014,803 under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to The Research Foundation For The State University of New York (SUNY at Binghamton) on October 1, 2025, for a collaborative five-year research project. This Project Grant supports the development and evaluation of computer adaptive testing (CAT) assessments designed to measure mathematical problem-solving...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Undergraduate Education awarded $349,516 to The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York (RF-SUNY) under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop an artificial intelligence-supported tool for analyzing and assessing the quality of mathematical argumentation in elementary classrooms. The project, which commenced September 1, 2025 and extends through August 31, 2028, integrates psychometrics,...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences awarded the Research Foundation of The City University of New York $111,379 on December 1, 2025, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop tools and techniques for solving nonlinear partial differential equations in complex geometry, specifically to advance understanding of canonical metrics on complex manifolds through study of the complex Monge-Ampere equation and constant scalar curvature...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $999,997 Project Grant under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to the Research Foundation of the City University of New York (RFCUNY) - Baruch College. This six-year project aims to increase STEM degree completion among low-income, high-achieving undergraduates with demonstrated financial need pursuing bachelor's degrees in mathematics at Baruch College. Over the project period, the funding will support scholarships for 12 students, as...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded San Diego State University Foundation $100,199 on August 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop a Calculus Cognitive Diagnostic (CCD) tool supporting personalized undergraduate learning. The project, a Level 2 Improving Undergraduate STEM Education collaborative effort involving Montana State University and Iowa State University as co-investigators, will create a free, user-friendly...
The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded $1,105,788 to the Research Foundation of The City University of New York (doing business as Rfcuny - Borough Manhattan Community College) on October 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076). The project will develop assessment tools to measure student understanding of equivalent equations using cognitive diagnostic models and clinical interview methods. Researchers and instructors will use these assessments to evaluate what students understand about core concepts needed to work with equations. The project employs nominal response cognitive diagnostic models combined with in-depth cognitive interviews to describe new conceptions of equivalent equations not documented in existing literature, define boundaries of existing conceptions, and explore relationships between conceptions, including which commonly co-occur and whether hierarchical relationships exist among them. The mixed-methods approach aims to produce assessments that capture a wider range of student thinking than existing tests and can be validated or adapted to other educational contexts such as high school. The methodology developed for equations assessment has potential application as a model for developing assessments on other topics. The project responds to the shortage of STEM graduates by addressing algebra as a barrier to STEM degree attainment. Instructors could use the resulting assessments to improve instruction, and researchers could assess the effectiveness of different courses and teaching approaches. Performance is based in New York, New York, with period of performance from October 15, 2026, through September 30, 2029.
