- This federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program provides $1,595,043 to Utah State University (USU) to develop teacher leaders with expertise in data science and mathematical modeling. The project aims to serve the national need of enhancing secondary mathematics teachers' skills in these areas, particularly in rural and Native American communities in Utah. The key objectives are to: 1) develop 24 master teacher fellows with...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Texas at Austin $401,510 on September 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to investigate how youth participatory mapping and community design research can strengthen mathematics interventions for elementary students. The project examines how learning environments across classrooms, intervention programs, homes, and community spaces shape access to...
- This $103,921 National Science Foundation project grant supports the development of quantitative models relating student learning outcomes and affect to varying degrees of instructional reform at Utah Valley University from June 2023 to May 2026. Through the NSF's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), the awardee will design introductory geoscience lessons at different levels of reformed teaching practice based on established classroom observation protocols. Lessons will be administered across...
- Utah State University was awarded a $529,047 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education under the STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) federal grant program (CFDA 47.076). The three-year award will fund the university's "PRACTICING SELF-REGULATION OF COGNITION AND MOTIVATION DURING PROBLEM SOLVING IN ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS" project from June 2021 through May 2024. The STEM Education program supports development of...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences awarded the University of Utah $999,998 on July 1, 2026, under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075) to create research-ready datasets from millions of student-AI interactions in a learning-by-teaching mathematics platform. The project will develop, document, and release large-scale, multimodal datasets derived from over 3 million student-AI learning-by-teaching interactions and more...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska $399,517 on July 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to conduct a research project on pedagogies of mathematics in and for engineering. The project explores how mathematics and engineering instructors perceive and leverage opportunities to connect mathematical reasoning with engineering concepts in undergraduate coursework. The research will...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded New York University $749,996 under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) on August 1, 2026, to conduct a longitudinal study investigating how children develop field-specific ability beliefs about mathematics—the conviction that success in math requires exceptional intellectual talent or "brilliance." The research will track 220 children ages 6 to 7 and one parent or guardian...
- This $600,000 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Undergraduate Education, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), will support Texas State University in developing equitable group work strategies for proof-based undergraduate mathematics courses. Over a two-year period ending December 2025, the university will design and implement instructor workshops on incorporating group-worthy tasks adapted from K-12 complex instruction principles. It will also study the...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Utah State University, in collaboration with the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, received a $506,181 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) awarded August 1, 2025. The award funds a five-year initiative (through July 31, 2030) to scale and expand the STEM Career Connections model across...
The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded Utah State University $310,964 on July 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to conduct a multi-method longitudinal study examining how elementary students' mathematics affect and achievement influence each other and develop over time from grades 2 through 5. The research draws on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 4th-Grade Longitudinal Dataset (TIMSS-L) to analyze reciprocal relationships between mathematics affect and achievement using structural equation modeling, incorporating variables including 4th-grade students' self-reported interest and confidence in mathematics, teacher-reported questionnaire items about instructional practices, and relevant covariates. Concurrently, the researcher will recruit a new longitudinal sample of second graders, their parents, and their teachers to collect qualitative data on students' lived experiences and explore how in-school and out-of-school factors influence mathematics affect and achievement development. The project aims to provide evidence about how learners develop positive mathematics affect and achievement to enhance STEM education experiences and career choices. Performance occurs in Logan, Utah, with a completion date of June 30, 2031.
