This $359,140 National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program grant, awarded on July 15, 2025, supports an interdisciplinary research project to develop a novel data-driven framework called SYSTOX. The project aims to quantify the toxicity impact of computing system design choices, particularly as demand for computing power increases with the rise of artificial intelligence. The research team, led by the University of Nevada, Reno, will analyze computing components to identify their elemental composition and assess the environmental impacts of e-waste. The resulting optimization framework will enable computer system engineers to make quantitative tradeoffs between performance, efficiency, and environmental footprint, transforming the design of computing architectures from microprocessors to data centers. This project serves the national interest by advancing sustainable computing technology and reducing harmful e-waste.
