This $100,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), will fund research at the Rochester Institute of Technology towards developing a methodology for designing sustainable software systems. Over the one-year period from September 2022 to August 2023, the researchers will conduct an empirical study of software applications in sustainability-relevant domains like cyber-physical systems and IoT. Based on the findings, they will define sustainability as a set of quality attributes, scenarios, and metrics for software. Finally, the researchers will create a catalog of design strategies and patterns to help developers explicitly address sustainability as a goal when building new systems. If successful, this work will lay the foundation for further advancing software engineering techniques that can help solve sustainability challenges through computing technologies.
