The National Science Foundation awarded a $122,606 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) located in Dauphin Island, Alabama. This 3-year grant, with a start date of February 1, 2025, will fund a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program focused on understanding how marine and estuarine ecosystems in the northern Gulf of Mexico respond to disturbances. The program will bring 8 undergraduate students to DISL each summer to conduct semi-independent research across disciplines such as coastal ecology, toxicology, microbiology, and oceanography. Students will also participate in professional development activities, including seminars, field trips, and a formal poster symposium, to enhance their critical skills. The goal of this REU program is to increase the likelihood of enduring student participation in the sciences and build capacity for their future success, while also supporting local communities and economies along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast.
