The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $110,482 Project Grant to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), a historically black, 1890 land-grant university. The grant, under the NSF's STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) program (CFDA 47.076), will support a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site program in marine and estuarine science. The program will provide research training for 24 undergraduate students, primarily from schools with limited research opportunities or underrepresented groups, over three summers from 2024 to 2026. Students will conduct mentored research in laboratory and field settings, focusing on the ecology of coastal rivers, lagoons, and estuaries in Maryland. The program will include workshops, seminars, field trips, and opportunities for students to present their research at conferences. Professional development activities will cover topics such as GIS and responsible conduct of research.
