This Project Grant award of $139,660 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program aims to establish practices to improve mentorship, learning, and engagement in undergraduate research experiences (UREs) in engineering. The primary goals are to implement, adapt, and study the outcomes of an existing toolkit of interventions and best practices that create structured reflection and mentoring activities within engineering UREs across five institutions. The project will form an Undergraduate Research Excellence Network (UREN) to provide training and coaching to help mentors, including faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, adopt the toolkit. The evaluation will focus on mediating processes involving student self-assessment, reflective thinking, and mindset, as well as outcomes related to students' autonomy, self-confidence in research, and ability to connect research with coursework. This work has the potential to expand access and improve the quality of mentorship in engineering UREs, while also strengthening the partnership between the participating institutions and providing freely available resources to enhance engineering education.
