This National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) project grant award of $365,905 to the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and the University of Central Florida (UCF) aims to enhance the CASELET tool, a scalable case-based learning platform, to improve data science problem-solving competency among graduate students. The project will augment CASELET with new features, leveraging large language models, machine learning, and data analytics to scale up the authoring of case studies, cognitive skills assessment, and evaluation of metacognitive competencies related to data science problem-solving. Over a 3-year period, the research team will pilot and test the enhanced CASELET tool with up to 1,000 graduate students across multiple programs at UMBC, a minority-serving institution. In addition to the research findings, the project will produce a guidebook to support the adoption of CASELET by other educational institutions.
