This $160,000 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (CFDA 47.075) program supports an early career scientist's postdoctoral research at the University of Washington. The research aims to investigate how to increase representation of underrepresented groups in tenure-track science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) faculty positions. Specifically, the project will examine how the defaults or default beliefs about desirable attributes in faculty recruitment impact the motivation of diverse applicants to pursue these positions. The research will employ correlational and experimental methods to: 1) assess whether job ad defaults reduce application rates and increase perceptions of partiality, 2) determine if faculty endorse heterogeneous versus inclusive job ads based on beliefs about applicant quality, and 3) test an intervention to increase faculty endorsement of inclusive job ads. This work is intended to provide evidence on the importance of broadening the defaults considered for faculty success to enhance representation in STEM tenure-track positions. No sub-awards are planned under this award, which has a project period from September 2024 to April 2025.
