This $267,007 National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant will fund a collaborative research project at Alabama A&M University to reconstruct a 250-300 year record of rainfall extremes and Amazon River water level fluctuations in the Eastern Amazon region. The project aims to use tree-ring data from Cedrela odorata and historical records to determine if recent flood and drought events are within the natural range of climate variability or attributable to factors like global warming and deforestation. The research will also explore the physical mechanisms driving Amazon hydroclimate extremes using climate modeling. Additionally, the project will investigate the paleoclimate potential of another tree species, Denezia excelsa, and develop an outreach website and workshops on Amazon forest and climate. This award, running from September 2024 to August 2027, supports research to better understand the long-term climate history and water cycle dynamics of the Amazon region.
