The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to The University of Iowa for $324,677.00 starting on July 1, 2024. The goals of this 3-year project are to: 1) Use dendrometers to measure how tree growth responds to changes in precipitation frequency, intensity, and timing at Ameriflux network sites in the U.S.; 2) Reconstruct historical wet extremes of precipitation from existing tree ring data in the International Tree Ring Database; and 3) Use forward proxy modeling to evaluate uncertainties in tree-ring based hydroclimate reconstructions and estimate the impact of future hydroclimate extremes on forest health. The project will train a postdoc, graduate student, and undergraduates, and conduct climate change outreach through a partnership with a nonprofit cinema's "Science on Screen" series.
