This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund a collaborative research effort to investigate subsurface water storage and seasonal dynamics in the Amazon rainforest and a savanna site in Brazil. The $363,098 award supports geophysical surveys, data analysis, and integrative modeling over a 3-year period from Aug 1, 2023 to Jul 31, 2026. The research, conducted in partnership with Brazilian scientists, aims to better understand the sources of water supporting the Amazon's vegetation, particularly during dry seasons. Key tasks include 2D seismic refraction, electrical resistivity tomography, and nuclear magnetic resonance surveys along hill-valley transects at the two study sites. The project will also produce educational materials on the interaction between belowground dynamics and aboveground vegetation in the Amazon ecosystem.
