This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Program (CFDA 47.041) project grant, titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: FW-HTF-RM: HUMAN-IN-THE-LEAD CONSTRUCTION ROBOTICS: FUTURE-PROOFING FRAMING CRAFT WORKERS IN INDUSTRIALIZED CONSTRUCTION", was awarded to The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) for $263,595 with a period of performance from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2026.

The goal of this research is to establish the technical and social foundations that promote efficient and well-balanced integration of "Human-In-The-Lead Construction Robotics" (HILCR) in industrialized construction. The project has two primary research streams: (1) transforming robotics-based automation in industrialized construction, and (2) evaluating craft worker need satisfaction and engagement in HILCR. The first stream will analyze panelized construction products and processes, and develop an intuitive control system for HILCR. The second stream will re-evaluate the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for craft workers in HILCR applications, identify tasks associated with greater worker need satisfaction, and develop training curriculum. This research aims to empower construction craft workers as leaders in robotics-enabled industrialized tasks while leveraging the physical capabilities of robotic systems as supporting tools.
