The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $208,000 Project Grant under the Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program to the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras Campus, a Hispanic Minority Serving Institution, to develop an innovative cyberinfrastructure showcasing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches in studying pollinator behavior in the Caribbean. The 3-year project will create new computer vision, software, and data analysis tools to expand the capacity to measure individual behavior of a large number of pollinators over longer periods. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the complex effects of environmental changes, contaminants, and other factors on pollinator behavior and biology. The project will consolidate a partnership between the Computer Science and Biology departments, integrate undergraduate and graduate student training, and increase UPR-RP's capacity in AI-related research to transform the university into a reference research center in the Caribbean on applying AI to transdisciplinary climate change research.
