The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences awarded a $328,865 Project Grant to The Trustees of Princeton University's Office of Research and Project Administration to conduct research under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) program. The goal of the research is to improve understanding of the mechanisms of accretion onto supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN) through echo mapping and radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The project aims to characterize the temperature profile, size scale, and aspect ratio of AGN accretion disks by tracing variability signals through archival data, simulations, and creation of mock light curves. This research will help prepare for the upcoming Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, which is expected to observe thousands of AGN accretion disks. The award supports training the next generation of scientists, including through a summer research program for formerly incarcerated students, to leverage the survey data.
