The National Science Foundation awarded a $153,355 Project Grant to the University of Alaska Anchorage under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to advance the understanding of the relationship between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. The 3-year award will support a comprehensive study of the regions surrounding black holes in a large sample of nearby active galactic nuclei. Key activities include measuring the distribution and motions of molecular, ionized, and coronal gas, as well as stellar dynamics, within the central 500 parsecs of 90 active galaxies using adaptive optics near-infrared integral-field spectroscopic data. This research will provide critical observational constraints to improve theoretical models of black hole-galaxy co-evolution. The project will also involve substantial undergraduate research experiences, as well as public engagement through planetarium shows, lifelong learning courses, and campus outreach events.
