The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Astronomical Sciences awarded a $707,214 Project Grant to the University of Colorado under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop next-generation general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) models for simulating black hole accretion flows and jets. The project aims to accurately link multi-wavelength observations of jets to the properties of the supermassive black hole and its surrounding environment. This will involve evolving electron distribution functions using kinetic prescriptions for particle acceleration and frequency-dependent radiative cooling. The GRMHD simulations will model accretion flow and jet structure up to 100 gravitational radii from the black hole to reliably predict broadband spectra and polarized radio emission, which will be compared to observational data. The grant will also support a postdoctoral researcher, undergraduate research opportunities, and the creation of public planetarium shows. All GRMHD models and source code will be made publicly available.
