Through quantitative...
- This Project Grant award for $393,800 from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program supports research to improve the effectiveness of engineering ethics education. The project aims to develop new educational strategies and teaching tools that can better equip future engineers to act ethically and understand the societal implications of their work. Through a series of tasks, the research will explore how undergraduate research, classroom instruction, and variation in...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.076 - STEM Education) in the amount of $300,000.00 aims to expand ethics education in undergraduate engineering curricula. The key products and services to be delivered through this 3-year project include: Co-developing a case study curriculum with industry, government, and tribal stakeholders to incorporate indigenous and industry ethical perspectives beyond traditional engineering ethics training. The curriculum will be...
- This National Science Foundation award of $298,779 from the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program supports efforts by California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) to examine student attitudes, identities, and motivations toward engineering, and develop contextualized entrepreneurial design learning modules to foster these qualities. The project, conducted by CSUF's Auxiliary Services Corporation Division of Sponsored Programs, aims to create learning experiences that value the diverse...
- This $191,532 two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Computing and Communication Foundations will fund research at San Francisco State University on early career engineers' views of ethics and social responsibility. The grant is part of NSF's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program, which supports basic research to strengthen scientific understanding of human behavior and decision-making. Specifically, the university will conduct a collaborative study...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $100,000 to Doane University will initiate research into the impact of a liberal arts education on the ethical development of engineering undergraduates. The project aims to (1) determine which components of a liberal arts curriculum contribute to the ethical development of engineering students, and (2) compare the ethical development of engineering students to their peers at the same institution. This...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Arizona State University received a $499,700 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Graduate Education under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2028. The award supports a comprehensive redesign of the university's Master of Science in Engineering program and the development of a new Graduate Certificate in Principled Engineering Leadership. The initiative integrates...
- This $399,998 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program aims to design, implement, and evaluate a new engineering education pedagogy called Scaffolded Ethics Autobiography (SEA). The SEA module is intended to promote engineering students' professional identity development by facilitating the construction of their own moral narratives, with the goal of producing ethical engineers who persist in engineering careers. The...
- Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded $157,936 to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside on September 15, 2025, for a collaborative research initiation project titled "Using Stories from Traditional Culture as Case Studies to Teach Virtue-Based Engineering Ethics" under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The project, which extends through August 31, 2027, will develop and deliver innovative...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) provides $366,778 to The University Corporation, a non-profit organization affiliated with California State University, Northridge (CSUN), a Hispanic-Serving Institution. The project will examine how faculty communication influences the development of engineering identity among Latinx undergraduate students at CSUN, particularly during the critical "sophomore slump"...
The National Science Foundation awarded a $107,162 Project Grant to California State University Los Angeles Auxiliary Services Inc. to develop critically conscious aerospace engineers through macro-ethics curricula. Under the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education program (CFDA 47.076), the awardee will partner with faculty from four institutions to design and incorporate transformative one-day macro-ethics modules into aerospace engineering courses. The modules aim to sharpen students' critical awareness of injustices within social systems and their agency as engineers to contribute to social good. Through quantitative and qualitative surveys, the team will assess students' baseline knowledge of macro-ethical issues and how the curriculum impacts their perceptions, awareness and desire to engage with the macro-ethical implications of future work. Dissemination of findings will occur through an open-access website and seminar series. The period of performance is August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2026.
