The award is funded under the NSF STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program, which supports initiatives to strengthen STEM education and workforce development. The project will develop and refine an intelligent online...
- This $602,858 National Science Foundation project grant to Chapman University will evaluate the impact of the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) Network on implementing the Vision and Change (V&C) framework for undergraduate biology education. Through a mixed-methods approach including surveys and interviews, the project aims to determine the extent to which V&C principles motivated participation in PALM, characterize perceptions of V&C among instructors involved, and...
- This Project Grant award of $199,912.00 from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) supports a multi-faceted project aimed at improving learning outcomes and increasing passing rates in introductory biology courses at the recipient institution. The key activities include: Developing interactive 3D-printed learning materials to enhance conceptual understanding in introductory biology courses. Integrating project-based research experiences into newly created open...
- This $399,988 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program aims to develop and test technology-based interventions to help introductory biology students improve self-regulation and learning. The project, led by the University of Colorado, will engage over 2,000 introductory biology students annually in reflective practices focused on motivation, metacognition, and self-regulation. The interventions will be integrated into a...
- This $500,000 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support the University of California Santa Cruz's implementation and evaluation of curricular undergraduate research experiences in the life sciences. The university will establish four new faculty-led course-based undergraduate research laboratories engaging up to 100 undergraduates, including those from underrepresented groups, in authentic research projects in molecular, cellular,...
- This National Science Foundation project grant award of $299,493 provides funding from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026 under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to Colorado State University. The award aims to improve evidence-based teaching practices in undergraduate biology courses through the development and testing of "Reading to Reason in Science" interventions focusing on scientific argumentation and processes. At least 1,000 undergraduates across three...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $199,989 will fund Bloomfield College's interventions to improve academic performance among biology majors under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076). The two-year award beginning June 1, 2022 will support a week-long intensive biology summer enrichment program, peer coaching and tutoring, and course-based undergraduate research experiences for incoming first-year biology students. These services aim to ease the transition to college,...
- This National Science Foundation project grant of $172,947 will fund the development of open response assessments to evaluate undergraduate student engagement in mathematical sensemaking across biology, chemistry, and physics disciplines. Awarded under the federal STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), the funding will support two aims over a four year period from March 2023 through February 2027. The first aim is to apply an evidence-centered design process to develop open-ended assessment items...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Purdue University a $1,566,948 project grant under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to support the "Grappling With Graphs: New Tools For Improving Graphing Practices Of Undergraduate Biology Students" project from August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2025. The grant aims to develop new tools to improve undergraduate biology students' skills in graphing, a practice critical to data analysis in STEM fields. Purdue will collaborate with California...
- Arizona State University received a $130,214 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education on January 1, 2022 for completion by December 31, 2024. The award is being used to fund the development of a self-guided online intervention to address student fear of negative evaluation in active learning undergraduate biology courses under the NSF's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076). The intervention aims to help more students feel comfortable...
The National Science Foundation awarded Chapman University a $349,039 Project Grant under the STEM Education (47.076) federal grant program. The grant will support research examining how students learn quantitative reasoning skills in introductory biology labs. The Principal Investigator will conduct observations and interviews of students working with quantitative data collected in biology labs to characterize what they notice and focus on. Validated instruments will measure any changes in students' quantitative reasoning abilities and interests related to differences in noticing themes. Think-aloud interviews will further determine students' focuses when analyzing quantitative data. This work will provide insight into how students transfer knowledge from mathematics to biology classes and influence their learning of quantitative skills. It will build the Principal Investigator's capacity for STEM education research through mentorship and professional development opportunities, including workshops and conferences. The grant period is from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2025.
