Dr. Chavis A. Stackhouse was awarded a $300,000 National Science Foundation Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to conduct research entitled "MPS-ASCEND: Critical Metals from Complex Waste Streams: An Electrochemical Roadmap to Selective Extraction" from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2025. The award is funded under the NSF's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to promote progress in the mathematical and physical sciences. Under this fellowship, Dr. Stackhouse will investigate new methods to advance the recovery of rare-earth elements from waste streams using energy efficient electrochemical processes. He will develop fundamental principles for the selective recovery of rare-earth metals from complex waste streams with high purity. Advanced characterization techniques will be used to elucidate the solvation of rare-earth elements and inform new routes for extracting them from waste. The research aims to mitigate reliance on foreign rare-earth resources and the environmental impacts of these elements in waste. Dr. Stackhouse will also develop a mentoring program to broaden participation of underrepresented minorities in STEM.
