About this award
D & D Meats, located in West Chazy, New York, received a $199,975.98 Project Grant award from the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service under the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grants – Supplemental Funding program (CFDA 10.180). D & D Meats operates a small slaughter and meat processing facility that provides livestock producers services such as beef cutting down to 1/16 live weight and pig processing at 0.5x- or 1x- live weight. The funding will support costs for D & D Meats to make improvements and carry out planning activities necessary to obtain a Federal Grant of Inspection, allowing the facility to become federally inspected. Services provided under the award will help D & D Meats, with its seven full-time employees and additional seasonal staff, to expand its offerings and better serve agricultural producers in the region.
Description
Our current services allow livestock producers to sell their beef down to 1/16 live weight, and pigs to be sold at .5X- or IX-live weight. Operation demand varies through the year and averages approximately 4 beef and 8 pigs per week. There are 7 fulltime employees, with an additional s+ hired during peak season. D & d meats is comprised of 3 operating components: retail store front, meat processing plant, and slaughterhouse. The retail store front is approximately 2400 SQ FT (remodeled 2010) and the processing plant (built to USDA standards,2017) is approximately 2650 SQ FT. Both components have drilled wells with UV-purifying systems in place. Facility water is tested 4 times annually by independent and licensed contractors. The slaughterhouse building (1900 SQ FT; updated 2021) is located approximately 1 mile away, has a drilled well, and HOUSES3 holding pens for beef with an additional 5 pens for sheep, goats, and pigs. The business currently composts on site and is registered with the department of environmental conservation (DEC) for the composting area. There is a very wide variety of equipment in use for production of specialty food/meat items. D & d meats is also nearing paperwork completion to become federally inspected.
