About this award
Dayton Meat Products, Inc. received a $200,000 Project Grant award from the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service under the Meat and Poultry Inspection Readiness Grants – Supplemental Funding program (CFDA 10.180). The funding will support facility upgrades and process improvements to enable Dayton Meat Products to expand production capacity and comply with federal standards for interstate meat shipment. Specifically, the grant funds will be used to repair the leaking roof, install a new cooling system, add 162 sq. ft. of cooler and freezer space, acquire a new clipping and grinding system estimated to increase processing capacity by 900,000 lbs., and obtain new operations software for food safety tracking. These upgrades aim to allow Dayton Meat Products to increase annual meat processing volume by 420,000 lbs. and expand sales into five additional states over the three-year grant period ending September 2024.
Description
In 2020, we processedapproximately 750,000 pounds of meat. We offer official and custom slaughter and products for wholesaleand retail. Our storefront with fresh and processed meat is the only food source for 20+ miles. We look to grow our harvest, processing, and interstate shipping through the CIS program. Our facility iscurrently inadequate for fsis standards. To meet fsis standards for CIS, we propose first fixing the roof ofour facility because with precipitation, IT leaks and causes water damage. We also propose adding a new cooling system for the processing room to comply with fsis temperatureprotocols and equip our facility to handle an additional 420,0000 pounds of meat during the grant period.an addition of 162 SQ. FT. Of cooler and freezer space will also help solve our storage bottleneck and allow usto increase volume by 40 percent.to comply with fsis standards and handle our increased volume, we also propose adding a new clipper andgrinding system, which we estimate will save 9,360 man hours and increase processing capacity by 900,000POUNDS during the grant period. To track food safety and capacity in compliance with fsis expectations, wealso will acquire new operations software.altogether through this program, we will grow our sales by $1.68 million during the grant period andexpand sales into 5 states. We plan to create 4 new jobs and source meat from 15 new farmers.
