Specifically, the grantee will investigate peroxy...
This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050), provides $214,924 to Aerodyne Research Inc. to develop a field-deployable Oxidation Flow Reactor and conduct associated laboratory and field studies. The Reactor will be used to better understand nighttime chemistry in the atmosphere, specifically the relative contributions of hydroxyl and nitrate radicals to the formation of oxidized volatile organic compounds and secondary organic aerosol. Researchers will study how these species impact weather, climate and human health. Key questions the project aims to address include the reproducibility of oxidation product and aerosol formation from VOC and nitrate radical reactions in the Reactor; identification of unique multi-day oxidation products; and changes in oxidation potential and products based on oxidant exposure in ambient air. Insights gained are intended to improve delineation of nighttime nitrate and ozone chemistry, including non-nitrogen containing nitrate oxidation products. The funding also supports several graduate students and an early career researcher.
