This National Science Foundation project grant award of $816,275 will fund research at the University of California, Davis from July 2022 through June 2025 to improve understanding of how photo-oxidants form and influence the chemistry of atmospheric particles under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). Specifically, the award will support measuring photo-oxidant concentrations and reaction kinetics in aerosol liquid water extracts from particles collected in Davis, California. It will also develop new methods to quantify photo-oxidant levels under highly concentrated ambient conditions and explore how triplets states of light-absorbing organic compounds and singlet molecular oxygen transform organic species in particles. Results will help elucidate the role of these reactive species in particulate organic formation, transformation, and loss to assist regulatory efforts addressing particulate matter air pollution. The university will mentor students and collaborate on modeling particle-gas chemistry in biomass burning plumes to explore condensed phase photo-oxidant impacts on organic aerosol evolution.
