This National Science Foundation project grant award of $334,376 will fund the development of a new field-deployable Oxidation Flow Reactor tool and its use in laboratory and field studies to advance understanding of nighttime nitrogen chemistry in the atmosphere. Specifically, the collaborators will build an Oxidation Flow Reactor to provide new insights into nitrate radical-initiated atmospheric oxidative aging processes and the relative contributions of hydroxyl and nitrate radicals to the formation of oxidized volatile organic compounds and secondary organic aerosol. This work directly addresses key questions around nitrate radical chemistry and its impacts. The award supports several graduate students and an early career researcher. The funding was provided under the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which aims to expand fundamental knowledge of the integrated Earth system through atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences research.
