Project Grant 20266701746661
- This $299,999 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) will fund research and extension activities at Oregon State University to help produce industry better implement cleaning and sanitizing programs to meet Produce Safety Rule requirements. Specifically, the awardee will (1) engage produce industry to characterize existing food contact surfaces and...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Oregon State University received a $611,000 project grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2028. The project will develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based imaging approach for the early detection of spoilage yeasts in fruit and vegetable juices. Yeasts are the predominant...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded University of California, Davis $633,133 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on August 15, 2026, for research into foodborne pathogen contamination in leafy green vegetables, particularly lettuce. The project addresses the risk of Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli, including Shiga toxin-producing strains, in fresh produce through the farm-to-fork chain, with emphasis on...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $291,106 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026, to develop and validate combined sanitizer treatments that disrupt biofilms formed by foodborne pathogens on food-processing equipment. The project evaluates up to one hundred sanitizer-biofilm inhibitor combinations on stainless-steel food-contact surfaces to identify two or three most effective...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Cornell University $649,767 on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to develop antimicrobial elastomeric materials for food processing equipment. The project, performed in Ithaca, New York through February 14, 2030, addresses persistent contamination of ready-to-eat food and beverage processing facilities by Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella species, which are...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded The Regents of the University of California at Riverside $591,499 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program on April 1, 2026, to develop rapid, in-field detection methods for foodborne pathogens in food products without the need for laboratory equipment or complex sample preparation. The award funds research to address the limitations of current detection methods. Culture-based plate counting...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Oregon State University $300,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop deep learning models and a user-friendly software application for predicting food shelf life through non-destructive imaging methods. The project addresses the 30–40% annual food waste rate in the United States by replacing traditional destructive testing and subjective visual...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Washington State University received a $650,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), awarded on September 15, 2025, with a completion date of September 14, 2028. The award funds the development of a real-time, on-site verification platform designed to assess the efficacy of surface sanitation processes in food processing...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Missouri System $287,891 on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop improved methods for removing bacterial biofilms from food processing surfaces. The research combines laboratory testing and data-driven analysis to evaluate chemical penetration enhancers—compounds derived from natural sources and already established in pharmaceutical...
- The Oregon State University was awarded a $793,592 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Food Safety Outreach Program (CFDA 10.328). The grant will support the Western Regional Center to Enhance Food Safety (WRCEFS) in continuing to foster collaboration on food safety education and stakeholder support for implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act through September 2024. Specifically, WRCEFS will expand its...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Oregon State University $633,750 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to develop practical decision guidance for managing Listeria monocytogenes contamination in food facilities. The project will convert environmental monitoring records, sanitation logs, and genomic data from six to eight Pacific Northwest food facilities—spanning produce, dairy, seafood, and ready-to-eat operations—into a persistence hazard score that predicts how long a contamination event takes to clear and the likelihood of recurrence within 30 to 90 days. In parallel, controlled experiments in benchtop drain assemblies will test quaternary ammonium sanitizer tolerance, whether tolerance carries fitness costs such as reduced survival under heat or dryness, and how peracetic acid combined with cleaning compares with quaternary ammonium alone, including survivors missed by standard culture testing. The research will produce a spreadsheet-based decision tool with decision thresholds, standard operating procedures, checklists, and training materials, evaluated in two to three cohort facilities. Performance occurs in Corvallis, Oregon, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2030. The assistance type is a Project Grant under CFDA 10.310.
