Project Grant 20266701746649
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $980,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to research antimicrobial resistance mitigation in biosolids processing. The award funds investigation of anaerobic digestion methods for reducing antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, antimicrobials, and antimicrobial resistance genes in sewage biosolids while generating biomethane and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $294,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, to identify and characterize antimicrobial resistance (AMR) reservoirs and transmission pathways in livestock-farm environments. The research will sample E. coli from wild birds and livestock across ten farms to measure bacterial transmission among hosts and livestock. The team will...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Missouri System $287,891 on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop improved methods for removing bacterial biofilms from food processing surfaces. The research combines laboratory testing and data-driven analysis to evaluate chemical penetration enhancers—compounds derived from natural sources and already established in pharmaceutical...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded The Regents of the University of California at Riverside $290,238 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop and evaluate food-safe protective coatings for food contact surfaces. The research will formulate coatings from food-grade ingredients already recognized as safe for food-related applications and test their resistance to microbial contamination,...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $644,325.55 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on April 15, 2026, for research on bacteria associated with legume nodules and crops such as soybean. The research addresses agricultural efficiency by optimizing microbial management to reduce dependency on synthetic nitrogen applications, which lower farm incomes, drive consumer prices, and contribute to waterway and...
- This $299,999 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) will fund research and extension activities at Oregon State University to help produce industry better implement cleaning and sanitizing programs to meet Produce Safety Rule requirements. Specifically, the awardee will (1) engage produce industry to characterize existing food contact surfaces and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $2.94 million on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to conduct field monitoring, stream measurements, computer modeling, and advanced data analysis to understand water, sediment, and nutrient movement in agricultural watersheds. The project combines monitoring of water flow and nutrient losses from farm fields and streams,...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Connecticut $292,500 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026. The project will use artificial intelligence to identify promising biosurfactant candidates that can enhance the performance of sanitizers used in food processing, then validate the most effective compounds through laboratory testing on stainless steel surfaces. Biosurfactants are naturally...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Montana State University $590,962 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on May 1, 2026, to develop an automated bacterial detection and removal system for hydroponic farming. The project addresses biofilm contamination in hydroponic environments by integrating two complementary technologies. The first develops a sensor coated with DNA-based aptamers that selectively bind target bacteria; upon...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Michigan Technological University received a $299,999 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, awarded August 1, 2025, with completion targeted for July 31, 2027. The project addresses the critical need for safe disinfection practices in treated wastewater used for agricultural irrigation by developing and testing three distinct disinfection...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $291,106 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on August 15, 2026, to develop and validate combined sanitizer treatments that disrupt biofilms formed by foodborne pathogens on food-processing equipment. The project evaluates up to one hundred sanitizer-biofilm inhibitor combinations on stainless-steel food-contact surfaces to identify two or three most effective antibiofilm treatments against Salmonella and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. Leading treatments will be validated on a pilot-scale fresh-produce processing line using lettuce and cucumbers to determine whether they reduce contamination on equipment and limit bacterial transfer to produce. The research will examine how the treatments alter bacterial metabolism to explain efficacy differences. Expected outcomes include an evidence-based precision sanitization protocol specifying appropriate sanitizer-inhibitor combination, concentration, and contact time based on antibiofilm efficacy, delivered as a practical sanitation resource for processors, researchers, and sanitation companies. The project will provide training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Performance occurs in East Lansing, Michigan, with a period of performance from August 15, 2026, through August 14, 2028. The assistance type is Project Grant.
