- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Carolina State University $2.366 million under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025, for integrated research and extension programs addressing agricultural productivity, animal systems, food safety, nutrition, and natural resource management. NC State will conduct research and extension activities focused on farm productivity and profitability for large- and small-scale...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Carolina State University $500,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on September 1, 2026, to develop practical solutions for detecting and managing Neopestalotiopsis, an emerging fungal disease threatening U.S. strawberry production. Researchers will collect samples from commercial strawberry fields and nurseries, study pathogen spread, develop rapid DNA-based tests for early...
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation $749,038 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on December 1, 2025, to assess trade-offs between growth and stress resilience in economically and ecologically important pine species. The recipient will investigate whole-tree productivity and functional trait responses to multiple stressors—drought, brown spot needle blight, and fire—across...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Carolina State University $500,000 on December 1, 2025, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to develop and deliver a teacher training program that integrates agricultural concepts into high school biology courses. The program engages high school teachers in hands-on agricultural experiences, supports their learning and confidence in connecting biology standards with agricultural concepts,...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $650,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to investigate genetic diversity effects on timber production in loblolly pine and eucalyptus. The research will test three complementary hypotheses: spatial niche partitioning of roots and crowns in genetically mixed loblolly pine plantings leading to greater resource utilization;...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Colorado State University $849,998 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to investigate how the pine seed microbiome confers resilience to lodgepole pine forests throughout the western United States. The research employs genome-resolved metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, germination tests, and greenhouse seedling bioassays to test whether the seed microbiome acts as a...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Central Program Planning Coordination and Support awarded North Carolina State University $125,843 on May 1, 2026, under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to accelerate genetic gain for Fusarium head blight resistance in southern soft wheat. The project runs through April 30, 2030, with performance at Raleigh, North Carolina. The award funds research to increase wheat productivity in North...
- Federal Grant Award Summary North Carolina State University received a $225,000 project grant award dated July 15, 2025, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The two-year research initiative, concluding July 14, 2027, will be conducted at the university's Raleigh, North Carolina facility and focuses on understanding plant microbiomes—the bacterial, fungal, and...
- The Department of Agriculture Forest Service Research Service Southern Research Station awarded the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services $591,892 on July 15, 2026, under the Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.652) to conduct Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plot collections and Timber Product Output (TPO) mill surveys through fiscal year 2027, including associated training and travel required for data collection activities in North Carolina. The award runs...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Carolina State University $649,520 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on September 1, 2026. The recipient will breed loblolly pine trees carrying homozygous resistance alleles at two major loci to confer near-immunity to fusiform rust, a disease endemic to Southern pine plantations that reduces tree survival and timber quality. The project builds on prior NIFA-funded work identifying two resistance loci in a donor tree. NC State will mate full-sibling trees from the existing mapping population to generate offspring homozygous for resistance alleles at both loci, then graft these trees into seed orchards to produce open-pollinated seedlings carrying consistent resistance. After validation, resistant germplasm will be distributed to state forestry agencies, private seed orchards, and seedling vendors for use in commercial pine plantations. Cooperative members will contribute in-kind support by planting and conducting field validation trials. Extension activities will communicate project progress and outcomes to end users. Performance of work will occur at Raleigh, North Carolina from September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2030. The award is classified as a Project Grant under AFRI's Foundational and Applied Science Program track, which supports research to alleviate impacts of pests and diseases and increase food and agriculture profitability.
