Project Grant 20266701346646
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation $749,038 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on December 1, 2025, to assess trade-offs between growth and stress resilience in economically and ecologically important pine species. The recipient will investigate whole-tree productivity and functional trait responses to multiple stressors—drought, brown spot needle blight, and fire—across...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $741,576 under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025. MSU AgBioResearch will conduct applied research to increase farmers' success in protecting the environment and advancing agriculture, including research on plant selection for desirable traits and methods to combat diseases and parasites. The work includes developing integrated crop and soil...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Carolina State University $850,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to identify ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in loblolly pine plantations across the southeastern United States under varying phosphorus and potassium conditions, reconstruct simplified mycobiomes in controlled conditions to evaluate their impact on tree growth and nutrition, and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan Technological University $649,980 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program to investigate the genetic mechanisms that regulate bud-break timing in poplar trees. The project will identify genes controlled by three previously discovered regulatory genes, determine how they coordinate bud-break, and establish the biological...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Carolina State University $649,520 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on September 1, 2026. The recipient will breed loblolly pine trees carrying homozygous resistance alleles at two major loci to confer near-immunity to fusiform rust, a disease endemic to Southern pine plantations that reduces tree survival and timber quality. The project builds on prior NIFA-funded work...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Colorado State University $849,998 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to investigate how the pine seed microbiome confers resilience to lodgepole pine forests throughout the western United States. The research employs genome-resolved metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, germination tests, and greenhouse seedling bioassays to test whether the seed microbiome acts as a...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Regents of the University of Michigan $741,354 on October 1, 2025, under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202). The award funds research to determine how soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stocks have changed following forest-to-cropland conversion in the Western Lake Erie Basin, and to estimate soil organic carbon sequestration and nutrient retention potential from reforestation in the...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $1 million to Michigan State University on December 15, 2025, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to develop and test a biobased polyurethane glue derived from lignin for use in engineered wood products and treated lumber. Michigan State University researchers will produce the lignin-based adhesive and use it to manufacture large-scale cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels at an industrial...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan Technological University $741,354 under the Cooperative Forestry Research program (CFDA 10.202) on October 1, 2025, to support scientific research on forest and wetland sustainability and resilience in the temperate to boreal Great Lakes region over the next decade. The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Technological University will conduct multiple research initiatives...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Mississippi State University $591,500 on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to develop forecasting models and scenario analyses for timber supply and demand in the southern United States. The project will build machine-learning models that integrate historical data on timber prices, housing markets, forest inventories, and hurricane damages to predict how timber...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Michigan State University $650,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to investigate genetic diversity effects on timber production in loblolly pine and eucalyptus. The research will test three complementary hypotheses: spatial niche partitioning of roots and crowns in genetically mixed loblolly pine plantings leading to greater resource utilization; effects of genetic mixing on belowground microbial communities in loblolly pine; and whether trait-specific pairings and greater genetic distance among eucalyptus pairs enhance drought resistance. Prior work demonstrated that individual loblolly pines planted in genetically mixed rows achieved approximately 7 percent greater volume by age 8–10 years compared to pure genotypes, with aerial LIDAR evidence showing genotypic mixtures consistently produced greater crown area, crown volume, and stem volume. The research leverages an ongoing 15-year-old loblolly pine trial across Virginia, North Carolina, and Brazil, and an existing completed dataset from the TECHS eucalyptus study spanning Brazil's full eucalyptus planted range. Performance occurs at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, with the period of performance running through August 31, 2031. The project grant is a Project Grant assistance type awarded through competitive peer and merit review.
