The project addresses the AFRI farm bill priority area of Plant Health and Production and the challenge of sustainable agricultural intensification by investigating how bioactive phytochemical metabolites (BPMs) impact seed...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Washington State University received a $180,000 Project Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, effective July 15, 2026, through July 14, 2029. The grant supports research addressing beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus) transmission of plant pathogens—specifically Beet Curly Top Virus (BCTV) and Candidatus Phytoplasma Trifolii (CPT)—that cause significant losses...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Maryland, College Park received a $1.5 million Project Grant from the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (CFDA 10.309) to conduct full-scale field testing of an innovative treatment for Huanglongbing (citrus greening disease). Awarded on September 15, 2025, with completion targeted for September 14, 2028, this research addresses the devastating bacterial pathogen that has plagued Florida and...
- This $1,000,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) program supports research and outreach to help citrus growers in sub-optimal environments manage the risk of Huanglongbing (HLB) disease. The primary objectives are to: 1) Host an epidemiology workshop to foster expert discussions and develop an updated model for HLB dynamics adaptable to diverse citrus-producing regions;...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Cornell University's Office of Sponsored Programs received a $5.84 million Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI, CFDA 10.309) program, awarded July 1, 2026, with a completion date of June 30, 2030. The project will develop an integrated robotic system and precision canopy management strategies to automate labor-intensive field operations in tree fruit...
Washington State University received a $5.85 million Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI, CFDA 10.309) awarded August 1, 2026, with completion targeted for July 31, 2030. This multidisciplinary, multi-state research initiative addresses bacterial canker disease (BCD) and blossom blast disease (BBD)—two economically significant diseases affecting stone fruit crops including cherry and peach. The project will deliver six interconnected research and extension products: pathogen identification and machine-learning prediction tools; molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis; host resistance and susceptibility genetics; evaluation of chemical and biocontrol management strategies with physiological assessments; economic cost-benefit analyses of management practices; and a comprehensive nationwide extension and outreach dissemination program. The research team from six states will work in a transdisciplinary manner to address the critical challenge of widespread copper resistance in the pathogens and the absence of viable management tools for growers. Ultimately, the project will produce novel control strategies and practical, science-based management recommendations to minimize disease impact and improve productivity and profitability in the stone fruit industry.Grant Award Summary
