This $300,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, with a period of performance from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027, will support research to develop new Integrated Pest Management (IPM) tactics for managing fungal diseases in peach orchards. The key objectives are to reduce the selection of antimicrobial resistance in the environment by substituting azole fungicides with biological control agents and using azoles at lower dose rates in mixtures during key times in peach production. The results from this seed grant will be used in a follow-up proposal to further mitigate azole resistance in both the target pathogen (Monilinia fructicola) and non-target organisms like Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida spp. The project will be conducted by Clemson University, a leading public land-grant research institution with extensive expertise in agricultural research, diagnostics, and federal contracting.
