The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) awarded a $1,200,000 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Education Grant to the University of New Mexico (UNM) to implement the LISTOS project. LISTOS aims to increase the pipeline of skilled graduates prepared for natural resource management (NRM) professions in northern New Mexico. The project, which runs from Sep 1, 2024 to Aug 31, 2028, will provide hands-on experiential education, leadership training, and literacy support to 56 high school students, 35 associate's students, 26 bachelor's students, and 14 master's students across UNM-Taos and New Mexico Highlands University. Key project outputs include 28 associate's, 22 bachelor's, and 10 master's degrees in NRM-related fields, 48 paid summer internships, 15 new/revised articulation agreements, and professional development support to prepare graduates for NRM agency jobs. The sub-awardee, New Mexico Highlands University, will collaborate on the project to further expand access and quality of NRM education for underrepresented students in the region.
