This $486,310 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program aims to establish an educational and training program on antimicrobial stewardship for historically underserved poultry producers. The overarching goal is to reduce the incidence and spread of poultry diseases while minimizing antimicrobial usage through practices such as good farming techniques, biosecurity measures, and strong veterinarian-client-patient relationships. The project also seeks to introduce innovative solutions like UV light and peracetic acid to combat microbial contamination in water systems and on egg surfaces. Additionally, the project will enhance the capabilities of extension educators and producers in poultry diseases and antimicrobial resistance through workshops. This 3-year project, starting on July 1, 2024, will be carried out by Tennessee State University, a historically black college and university (HBCU) located in Nashville, Tennessee.
