The Agricultural Research Service was awarded $500,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The three-year project grant will fund research at the Southeast Area location in Stoneville, MS to identify the functional pathways by which avian pathogenic Escherichia coli infection occurs in broiler chickens. The research aims to provide mechanistic explanations to enable the design of antibiotic-alternative approaches for treating and preventing E. coli respiratory infections and colibacillosis. By studying the microbial mechanisms through which production-related heat stress initiates E. coli infection, the project expects to significantly improve the ability to prevent such infections in poultry. The results will support the long-term sustainability of the U.S. poultry industry.
