Purdue University will receive $749,998 under a five-year Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310). The grant will support Purdue in providing multidisciplinary research, education, and outreach experiences to undergraduate students focused on addressing complex challenges at the nexus of water, energy, environment, food and nutrition. A select group of participants will be mentored through scientifically sound and socially relevant projects designed to prepare a diverse workforce with skills in these interrelated fields, as demand is expected to increase with population growth and resource depletion concerns. The overarching goal is to train current students for more than 50,000 anticipated annual job openings requiring bachelor's degrees or higher in related disciplines across the U.S.
