This $640,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) will fund research at North Carolina State University from June 2023 through May 2027 aimed at enhancing nutrient utilization efficiency in neonatal pigs. The research goals are to improve energy utilization in piglets before and after birth by evaluating maternal carnitine transfer across the placenta and mammary gland, examining the effects of increasing gene expression of organic cation transporters specific for carnitine on carnitine transport and fat utilization, and exploring the regulatory role of these transporters in carnitine movement within placenta, mammary tissue, and intestine using isolated tissue cultures. The work is expected to increase maternal carnitine transfer, offspring uptake, and fat oxidation by modifying transporter expression levels. Outcomes seek to improve energy use and survivability for neonatal pigs with the goal of practical commercial application benefiting the US $2 billion swine industry.
