The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded a $792,255 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program to Texas A&M Agrilife Research. The grant aims to characterize the behavioral, physiological, and genetic variability in dairy cows' heat stress responses through non-invasive monitoring using sensors, robotic milking systems, and video analytics. Data on productivity, reproductive success, health, and temperament will be collected under multiple environmental conditions. Results will be combined with genotype data to identify novel phenotypes and evaluate associations related to thermotolerance. The knowledge gained is intended to inform temperament-based selection strategies for thermotolerance and identify non-invasive metrics for genetic selection. A $100,000 sub-award was provided to the University of Idaho to optimize dairy cattle welfare and productivity in thermally challenging climates.
