The Regents of the University of California at Riverside was awarded a $750,000 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The four-year project aims to develop strategies to minimize the accumulation of chemicals of environmental concern in edible plant tissues when using treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation. Through field experiments on row...
The Regents of the University of California at Riverside (UC Riverside) was awarded a $180,000 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The three-year project aims to increase understanding of strigolactone diversity and selective recruitment of beneficial microbes to enhance crop stress tolerance and nutrient acquisition. UC Riverside will incorporate...
The University of California, Riverside received a $300,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) on August 1, 2022 to complete work by July 31, 2024. The funding supports the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program, which provides support for fundamental and applied research, extension, and education addressing food and agricultural sciences (CFDA #10.310). Specifically,...
This $999,618 project grant from the Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) will fund the development of an antimicrobial resistance mitigation system incorporating engineered biochar adsorbents tailored to remove specific contaminants from reclaimed water. The University of California, Riverside will design a large-scale system to efficiently remove antibiotics and antibiotic...
This Project Grant award of $849,928 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (CFDA 10.310 - Agriculture and Food Research Initiative) will fund research by Utah State University to investigate the microbiome of native drought-tolerant plants in the Intermountain West region. The project aims to isolate, characterize, and test plant growth-promoting bacteria from the rhizospheres of native plants like Ceanothus velutinus and Cercocarpus ledifolius....
This Project Grant award of $850,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) will support research to optimize agricultural microbiomes for sustainable improvement of crop yields and nutrient use efficiency. The overarching goal is to identify plant-bacteria communication molecules that influence soil microbial community assembly and mitigate plant nutrient stress. This will...
The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded an $850,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to the Regents of the University of California at Riverside for research on rhizobia microbiota and their impact on sustainable agricultural practices. The three-year award beginning January 1, 2022 will support characterization of environmental and genomic mechanisms that mediate competition among rhizobia strains to...
The University of Utah Office of Sponsored Projects Division received a three-year, $899,934 Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program (CFDA 10.310). The grant will fund agricultural field and greenhouse studies over three years to evaluate the effects of contaminants of emerging concern in treated sewage sludge or biosolids on soil health parameters when...
This $299,997 project grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Capacity Building for Non-Land Grant Colleges of Agriculture (CFDA 10.326) program. The grant funds an integrated research, education, and outreach/extension project led by California State University-Bakersfield (CSUB) in partnership with the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and University of California Cooperative Extension Kern County. The key...
This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program supports research to study the social impacts of integrating controlled environment agriculture (CEA) and non-conventional water treatment technologies. The $649,996 award to Clemson University aims to analyze stakeholder preferences for using non-conventional water sources, such as saline/brackish water,...
The Regents of the University of California at Riverside was awarded a 5-year, $250,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (CFDA 10.310 Agriculture and Food Research Initiative) to study the impact of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in reclaimed wastewater on the soil microbiome and plant-microbe interactions of soybeans.
The key objectives are to: 1) measure CEC concentrations in reclaimed wastewater used for irrigation in southern California, 2) evaluate the effects of selected CECs on the soil, root, and nodule microbiomes of soybeans, and 3) determine the impacts of CECs on the soybean-Bradyrhizobium nitrogen fixation process. Findings will be shared with local water districts to inform efforts to reduce CECs in reclaimed water. The project also includes educational outreach to train middle school students, teachers, and undergraduates on the importance of plant-microbe interactions in sustainable agriculture.
