The National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the United States Department of Agriculture awarded a $799,988 Project Grant to the University of Florida's Division of Sponsored Research under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310). The grant aims to improve climate resilience and preserve productivity in loblolly pine plantations, the most economically important timber species in the Southeastern U.S., which are threatened by more frequent and extreme hotter-drought events due to climate change. The University of Florida will work to identify climate-ready pine genotypes and ideal trait combinations to inform breeding efforts. Researchers will determine genetically-based growth and survival trait combinations conferring climate resilience at different developmental stages. Using physiological, genomic, and spectral methods along with mechanistic modeling, they seek to reveal plant response mechanisms to abiotic stress and discover ideal climate-resilient growth and survival trait profiles. A subaward of approximately $100,000 will support collaboration with France's National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment to utilize its Sureau mechanistic plant hydraulics model and two droughtbox instruments developed by the co-principal investigator to identify optimal survival trait combinations through simulations incorporating direct and spectrally-predicted trait data.
