The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. (UGA Research Foundation) was awarded a $900,000 federal Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The goal of this 4-year project is to improve sustainable forest management through enhanced harvest planning, data-driven decision-making, and reduced timber harvest site impacts. Key objectives include characterizing machinery travel patterns and impacts on soil properties and tree growth in southern pine plantations, quantifying the effects of machine traffic on tree growth, and developing a harvest planning decision support system. This collaborative effort also involves the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, the Swedish Forest Research Institute, timber REITs, and other industry partners, leveraging their resources and expertise. Findings from this project will directly support the long-term sustainability of over 23.5 million acres of planted forests managed by the project's industry partners in the U.S. South.
